Protect yourself and your goods when loading
Jul 08, 2013
Here are some helpful hints to keep you safe during the loading process.
1. Hire a trolley
Lifting items that are too heavy can easily lead to back strain. Don’t risk injury, hire a trolley from Containaway. With a trolley, you can carry several boxes at once, transport bulky items and move heavy boxes with ease.
2. Be careful when lifting
The easiest way to injure your back is through incorrect lifting. If you must lift anything without a trolley, always make sure you employ the correct technique:
- Bend your knees, not your back
- Keep your back straight
- Keep your head up
- Carry the load close to your body.
3. Be aware of your surroundings.
Before you start your move, organise the space so that high-traffic areas such as hallways are clear of any obstacles – including pets and children!
Consider how far you will need to carry the box, whether you need someone to help open a door and whether the path is likely to contain stairs, curbs or other tricky surfaces. Get someone to help you if need be.
4. Don’t rush
At Containaway, we don’t collect your self storage container until you call us, so there is no need to cut corners. After all most injuries can take more time to heal than you could ever save by rushing.
5. Wear proper clothing and footwear.
Beware of loose fitting clothes that can catch on something and always wear suitable footwear, preferably with closed-toes and good grip.
6. Pack safely
Ensure your belongings are packed safely before getting the next load. Don’t pack boxes too high or they may topple over onto you.
7. Don’t leave yourself open to theft
While it might be a bit of a pain, it’s always best to lock your self storage container with your padlock in between loads, particularly if you cannot see it from your house.
Likewise, don’t jam your front door open while you are preoccupied packing your container, the last thing you want is to tempt thieves.
Don’t forget, if you’d rather our experts pack your container for you, just give us a call. We’d be happy to take care of all the heavy lifting for you.
